Portrait of Home!
Consider the 'home' as art.
First off, we all live in some kind of dwelling, be it humble or grandiose. As with many aspects of one's daily existence, the homes we inhabit too often become invisible to us, going largely unnoticed and/or unappreciated. An artist, however, has the power to see those often overlooked visual qualities that may lie hidden and unrecognized. Capturing and highlighting these elements of a home in a pleasing and/or challenging fashion with paint on canvas, can indeed transform the home into 'art'.
While employed as a freelance commercial artist, I often worked for new home builders, creating architectural renderings of new homes in idyllic settings, for promotional and advertising purposes. While this work allowed me to refine the technical skills needed to create an accurate and convincing rendering of any
home, I secretly wished for the opportunity to add more artistic flare to the paintings.
Working now as a fine artist, I find that homes and buildings are among my favorite subjects. I revel in the challenge of seeking out and showcasing those qualities that can transform a home painting into a work of art. I am a huge fan of historical architecture, but am also drawn to newer homes that feature strong design and unique craftsmanship.
Many famous painters have included homes and buildings as the subjects of their work. Two of my personal favorites both painted dwellings found within the city of Toronto, often modest but compelling and beautiful none the less.
Upon accepting a commission to create a painting or rendering of a home, I look at it eagerly as a new opportunity to not only satisfy or exceed a clients' expectations, but to create a beautiful and lasting piece of art.
